Rhode Island woman charged for alleged role in fatal car accident

Going out on a Saturday night is a weekly tradition for many people in Rhode Island. They often look at it as a way to get out of the house, blow off some steam and reward themselves for getting through their work week. Usually none of that presents a problem -- unless the person unwinding does so with alcohol and then causes a car accident on the way home.

A Rhode Island woman was recently arrested on charges of drunk driving that resulted in death. Reports indicate the woman was driving with one passenger in her car when she allegedly drove her vehicle into a utility pole. Her passenger, a 26-year-old Rhode Island man, was thrown from the car upon impact.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The woman was also taken to the hospital. She received treatment for minor injuries before her release.

In addition to the drunk driving charges, the woman faces several counts of possessing a controlled substance. Her license was suspended after her recent arraignment. She was released from custody on $10,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court in early February.

The driver of a car assumes certain responsibilities. It is often assumed that they are capable of driving safely and reaching their destination without incident. When that assumption is incorrect, and the passenger is killed in a car accident, the decedent's family may want to consider a wrongful death lawsuit. It may be one way to hold the driver accountable for what happened while receiving financial assistance when it's needed most.
