What can help me keep safe while jogging?

Hang on outdoor enthusiasts; the warmer months are on their way. And this is especially good news if you are ready to lace up the running shoes and resume your jogging routine. Of course, the safest places to put in a few miles are those that are well away from traffic, such as parks or tracks.

But you can get a jog in along the streets in your neighborhood, just so long as you pay close attention to your surroundings and take some simple precautions. The following tips can serve as reminders for experienced joggers and can help new joggers get off to a safe start:

  • Before going out, tuck a valid ID and a cellphone somewhere about your person and let someone else in your household know you are going for a jog.
  • Wear apparel that is brightly colored and can be easily seen. If you are running when it's dark outside, it is best if you also don some reflective gear.
  • Face the traffic as you jog. This way you can see what's coming and react accordingly.
  • Try to stick to a route that avoids high-risk traffic, such as areas where people will be leaving restaurants, bars or parking lots.
  • Give yourself plenty of room when near traffic. When near heavy traffic or on narrow roads, you can move over to the shoulder of the road or sidewalk.

These are just a few tips that can help you steer clear of trouble when out on a run. So long as you are careful and follow the rules of the road, you will likely have a good, safe workout. But the fact is, runners are always physically vulnerable when around traffic.

It is all too easy for an inattentive or impaired driver to run a light or swerve into the path of a runner. A collision with an automobile could leave you facing very steep medical bills. If you or someone you love was struck by a motor vehicle while out jogging, a personal injury attorney may be able to help you get appropriate compensation.
