Reviewing statistics on age and car crashes

From intoxication to drowsiness, this blog has covered many of the reasons why people find themselves in a motor vehicle accident. However, there are other factors that may play a role in a crash, such as the age of a driver. When it comes to age, various issues could increase the likelihood of a crash, such as a driver’s inexperience. However, it is important to take a look at the statistics on this topic and understand how drivers of different age groups may find themselves in a wreck.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those between the ages of 15 and 19 only accounted for seven percent of the total population in America during 2013. That said, when it comes to the costs associated with auto accident injuries, they represented 11 percent of the overall costs throughout the same year. Over the course of 2015, an average of six people between the ages of 16 and 19 passed away each day due to injuries they sustained in traffic collisions.

To make matters worse, traffic accidents are the primary cause of teen fatalities in America. In fact, more than 2,300 people between the ages of 16 and 19 passed away during a car crash during 2015. Clearly, motor vehicle accidents are a major problem for younger drivers. However, traffic collisions are also a concern for older drivers as well. The CDC reports that throughout 2014, over 5,700 older Americans passed away due to auto crashes. Regardless of a driver’s age, these crashes are a major concern for everyone on the road.
