Mild Traumatic Brain Injury - The Silent Epidemic Awakens

Mild traumatic brain injury has in the past been known as the "silent epidemic" in as much as people that suffer mild traumatic brain injuries including persistent post-concussion syndrome look the same as they always did, have negative radiological imaging and negative neurological findings. Because of this, this terrible impairment has been known as the "silent epidemic".

The symptoms that the mild traumatic brain injury victims suffer are far from silent including cognitive problems, memory difficulties, changes in personality, difficulty functioning and multitasking, and an overall change in personality.

According to the Centers for Disease Control recent data shows that approximately 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury annually.

Because of many recent events this terrible problem is no longer "silent" but is gaining the attention of many people and is in the limelight in terms of prevention and diagnosis.
Many recent events have occurred including the wounded coming back from the Middle East with concussions and post-traumatic stress disorder, the notoriety that concussions are getting in sports including professional, college and youth, and new advances in diagnosis including advanced imaging such as the MRI using DTI software (diffuse tensor imaging). All of these events are instrumental in making this terrible condition known, helping to prevent it and helping to diagnose it.

It is being recognized that many people with a mild traumatic brain injury not only are not diagnosed in the emergency room of the hospital but also may not even have had any initial medical treatment.
