A university car accident leaves 1 dead and 4 students injured

What may have started out as a good time with friends turned deadly for one Bryant University freshman. It was in the early morning hours of Oct. 24 that a car carrying five Rhode Island students was driving around the campus when the car slammed into a tree at the road's end near the campus maintenance building. The freshman passenger later died at the hospital due to the injuries he suffered in the car accident.

The deceased passenger was riding in the rear right seat when the car careened into the tree. The other occupants of the car where taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. As Smithfield Police continue their investigation of this deadly crash, the university is keeping quiet on the subject.

Authorities believe that there are no signs of foul play and have for now ruled out alcohol as a factor in this terrible car accident. The driver of the car passed a sobriety test at the scene. The dead-end road was apparently not well lit, which may have a contributing factor.

As many Rhode Island residents may already be aware, if a person dies in a car accident, the driver may not only be responsible, but also liable for all injuries as a result of an accident. The family of the deceased student is entitled to file a wrongful death claim against the driver of the car for financial restitution to help defray the costs associated with the premature death of the victim. The three other occupants may be able to file personal injury claims for damages including medical costs.
