Students learn how texting can lead to a serious car accident

Distracted driving is becoming one of the leading causes of car accidents among young people. Inexperienced drivers in Rhode Island and across the nation are at risk of becoming involved in a major car accident while engaged in activities such as texting while driving. One program, sponsored by an area insurance company, seeks to educate high school students on the dangers of texting while driving.

The program allows newly licensed drivers to spend time in a simulator that replicated the driving experience. They are put through a number of exercises, then allowed to text while they attempt to operate the simulation program. The result is often a crash, in which serious injuries may have been the result, had the crash happened on a roadway and not in the digital realm.

Students report being shocked at just how dangerous it is to divert attention from the act of driving, even for short periods of time. The course also teaches about the risks of other forms of distraction while driving, such as eating or talking on a cell phone. Since the program began in 2009, as many as 5,000 students have gone through the course.

Programs such as this may help reduce the number of serious crashes that take place on Rhode Island roadways. For those who have been injured in a car accident that involved distracted driving, the price paid is often enormous. Physical injuries can lead to a significant alteration in the quality of one's life, and there are a wide range of financial repercussions that affect accident victims. Many opt to pursue a personal injury lawsuit to help them recover damages sustained in the incident.
