Car accident: wrong-way driver causes accident on bridge

State police from Providence, Rhode Island, started receiving multiple calls at about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. Prior to the car accident, callers had reported a vehicle heading south in a northbound lane. Soon afterward, police began receiving calls about a car traveling east on a westbound lane, and it was then determined that it was the same car.

The wrong-way driver then crashed her car into an approaching vehicle on the bridge that spans the Providence River. Unable to safely avoid the accident, two other cars collided, causing yet another car accident. A police officer at the scene stated that the suspect was a 28-year-old New Bedford woman.

The woman suffered serious cuts to her leg and required surgery. Three other victims were taken to the hospital where their minor injuries were treated before they were released. The wrong-way driver was arrested on drunk driving and reckless driving charges.

Rhode Island residents who have been victims of motor vehicle accidents may want to expand their knowledge and understanding of the relevant state laws. This knowledge could help a victim decide the best way to proceed in recovering any monetary damages due for injuries suffered as a result of a car accident. In this case, if the wrong-way driver is found to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs and deemed responsible, the injured parties retain the right to file personal injury claims. In circumstances where the law determines that an act of negligence was committed, a Rhode Island court may also consider the imposition of punitive damages, in addition to any compensatory damages awarded.
