Rhode Island man killed in motorcycle crash

Rhode Island residents who have been involved in motor vehicle or motorcycle accidents may be wise to expand their knowledge on the relevant laws pertaining to legal action after such an incident. Rhode Island police reported a fatal motorcycle crash that took the life of a 56-year old man recently. The man was traveling on a motorcycle at about 1:20 p.m. on the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 11.

An investigation into the details of the accident is underway. The chief of the local police reported that the motorcyclist was traveling behind an SUV. When the SUV made a turn to the left, the motorcyclist veered to the left to avoid the turning vehicle.

The motorcycle accidentally hit the SUV and then the guard rail. Although he was wearing a crash helmet at the time of the accident, it was not enough to save the man's life. Police believe that a glare from the sun may have played a part in the accident, but the investigation will help determine if the SUV driver was in any way negligent.

Depending on the findings of the investigating team, the family of the motorcyclist may now wish to file a wrongful death claim in a Rhode Island court. In a successfully litigated case, the family could be awarded monetary damages that would help them handle the final expenses of the man they lost in this motorcycle crash. In circumstances where the law determines that an act of negligence was committed, a Rhode Island court may also consider the imposition of punitive damages, in addition to any compensatory damages awarded.
