One car crash kills driver, another kills pedestrian on Route 146

In one day, Route 146 in Rhode Island saw the death of two people. One car crash occurred between two vehicles. The other occurred between a tractor-trailer and a pedestrian.

The first accident occurred when a minivan pulled over to the side of the road. The driver got out of his vehicle and stepped onto the roadway into the path of a tractor-trailer. Emergency personnel arrived to find the man alive, but he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Authorities do not believe speed or impairment were factors in the accident.

In the first accident, an 89-year-old woman was heading northbound on the south side of Route 146. Numerous calls to police were made about the woman's vehicle traveling the wrong way. Unfortunately, officers were unable to get to the woman before she collided head-on with another vehicle, and within a few minutes of the first calls, additional calls came in about the crash. The elderly woman died because of the injuries she suffered, and the other driver was last reported to be in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

The injured driver in the second car crash could face an extended recovery, during which time he may incur significant medical expenses and lost wages. A recovery of those damages and others may be possible through the filing of a personal injury claim against the deceased driver's estate. The family of the deceased man in the first accident may have a more difficult time proving negligence on the part of the truck driver. However, since Rhode Island assigns a percentage of fault to each party, a recovery may be possible if the family meets the standards under the law.
