Study examines the cost of treatment for traumatic brain injury

When a person suffers a traumatic brain injury during a car accident, it is sometimes difficult to estimate the total cost of their recovery. Rhode Island drivers may be interested in a study that looks at rehospitalization, a prominent cost on the road to recovery.

The study, which examined over 600 traumatic brain injury patients at four separate facilities, found that there was a 20 percent incidence of these patients having to return for further hospitalization. The researchers looked at various information about the patients, including the causes and extent of their injuries, the source of payment for their treatment and other data. The study aimed to find a reason for the higher-than-average rehospitalization rate that those with TBI face.

The 20 percent rehospitalization incidence, researchers found, was split evenly between what experts termed elective and non-elective treatments. Elective treatments included bone or joint surgeries which could affect the injured person's quality of life. Non-elective treatments, on the other hand, included those for mental health issues and seizures. The researchers concluded that this rehospitalization should be included in the estimated cost of a person's lifelong treatment and that the study would be of interest to many parties.

When attempting to estimate personal injury damages after a person suffers catastrophic injuries in a car crash, all aspects of treatment should be taken into account. In addition, the person's pain and suffering, lost wages and other costs are important to compensate. An attorney with experience in car accident cases may be able to help figure out these costs and file a lawsuit against the responsible party.
