Common errors that cause crashes involving large trucks

Car crashes are one of the major causes of death in Rhode Island and throughout the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Many of these car accidents involved large trucks. For instance, in 2012, 104,000 people were injured, and 3,921 were killed in motor-vehicle accidents involving large trucks. Because of the large size of a tractor-trailer or other large trucks, the truck drivers often suffer fewer injuries and deaths than the occupants of passenger vehicles when accidents occur.

However, in many cases, it is the drivers of the passenger vehicles that are at fault for accidents involving large trucks. One of the most common errors that drivers of passenger cars make is to misjudge the stopping distance of a truck. Another common error drivers make is to drive in the zones where trucks have little or no visibility.

Truck drivers may also contribute to or cause accidents in part due to factors inherent in the industry such as inadequate training, compensation systems that encourage unsafe driving and unrealistic schedules. These industry pressures cause drivers to rush or drive for too many consecutive hours.

If a person is injured in an accident involving a large truck, he or she may be entitled to financial compensation. In cases involving commercial trucks, there is often more than one defendant. For example, the driver, the truck's owner and the trucking company may all be listed as defendants. A lawyer may be able to evaluate a case and determine who should be held liable. Most personal injury cases are resolved through negotiation. However, some complicated or contentious cases do require litigation.
