How can you stay warm on winter motorcycle ride?

In the very near future, the mild, cool weather of fall will give way to the rather blustery and cold conditions of winter that Rhode Islanders know to expect every year. And while many motorcyclists choose to put their machines in mothballs until the warm weather returns, some prefer to keep riding whenever possible.

But cold weather motorcycle enthusiasts should take special steps to make sure they stay safe and maintain at least some level of physical comfort while tooling down the road. But becoming chilled while out on a ride can do more than just cause a rider discomfort. The chances of being involved in a serious accident may also be increased by the lower temperatures.

Motorcycle apparel is the key to staying warm on a ride. The following are some things to bear in mind when you are picking out motorcycle clothing and gear:

  • You want to wear a jacket that can be sealed at the neck opening, and shirts and pants that can be sealed at the cuffs so as to keep the cold air from coming through.
  • Choose clothing that has quality insulation. Wool and certain synthetics can provide you with the warmth you need.
  • You want to make sure your torso stays warm. A cold torso restricts the flow of blood to the feet and hands.
  • Quality gloves and motorcycle boots can greatly help prevent your hands and feet from getting cold.

The effect cold air can have on a motorcyclist's body highlights just how physically vulnerable riders can be. A spill or collision could leave a motorcyclist with severe injuries that can only be addressed with expensive, long-term care.

If you are injured while riding a motorcycle, it is important that you get all the compensation to which you are entitled. A personal injury attorney may be able to work with insurance companies and help you get appropriate recompense.
