Threats for accidents abound when running in winter weather

For runners, it is simply impossible to forgo the pleasures of lacing up the training shoes and taking off for a good brisk jog around the neighborhood. For those who have been bitten especially hard by the running bug, only the most extreme weather conditions can postpone a regular workout.

As all runners know, cold weather is typically not a problem. If you put on the right clothing, you will barely be affected by the low temperatures. In fact, once you get up to speed, and your body heats up, winter runs are sometimes the very best.

Winter weather presents hazards that smart runners acknowledge and adjust for. For instance, since it gets dark so early, it is important to choose routes that are well lit. This is especially important if there may be patches of ice on the ground. One slip and you could be sidelined for a long time.

Motor vehicles are an even greater danger to runners in the winter than during the rest of the year. At night, runners should always wear bright reflective clothing to be more visible. At all times of the day, runners need to obey the rules of the road just like all other pedestrians. This means only crossing the streets at crosswalks and always checking in both directions prior to stepping into the road.

However, sometimes, runners get hit by vehicles, even if they had taken precautions and obeyed all the rules. In the winter, it is all too easy for a car to lose control on an icy road and careen into a runner on a sidewalk or in a crosswalk.

Even the healthiest, strongest runner is no match for a moving vehicle. Karns Law Group understands the challenges faced by runners and other pedestrians who have been injured in car accidents. We have experience helping our clients pursue appropriate compensation for their injuries, and you can read about our services on this website.
