Identifying the symptoms of brain injury

When someone experiences head trauma, it is important to watch for any signs of brain injury. The symptoms can be obvious or difficult to detect, but being aware can increase the chances of securing the appropriate treatment in Rhode Island. A patient’s outcome may depend heavily on how quickly the correct injury is identified.

The Brain Injury Association of America states that since each side of the brain controls different functions of the body, symptoms can vary depending on the location that was affected. Signs of an injury to the right side of the brain can include:

  •          Limited control over the left side of the body
  •          Affected verbal memory
  •          Difficulty with sequencing
  •          Trouble receiving and expressing language
  •          Logic impairments
  •          Reactions of anxiety or depression

Left-sided brain trauma generally causes symptoms that can be less apparent, including:

  •          Perceiving music differently
  •          Lessening control over movements of the right side of the body
  •          Deficits of the visual memory
  •          Altering of creativity

Victims who have brain injuries on both sides of the brain can exhibit symptoms from both lists as well as fatigue, confusion and difficulty concentrating.

There are also less obvious symptoms that may occur after a mild brain injury. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development reports that common head injury symptoms can include dizziness, confusion and headache or other signs such as ringing ears, blurry eyesight, or changes in behaviors, sleeping habits or mood. If any of these symptoms or other changes are noticed after head trauma, it is important to have the victim assessed by a medical professional immediately.
