What are the different types of amnesia?

Sometimes, it can be difficult to tell if you or a loved one in Rhode Island is suffering from amnesia because there are many different forms of the condition. Some symptoms may be more obvious, but others can be less noticeable. Here are the different types of amnesia and their symptoms from Healthline.com

Infantile amnesia is a phenomenon that causes sufferers to forget their early childhood memories. It can cause a loss of memories up until the time patients were three to five years old.

Another type is retrograde amnesia. This type can accompany dementia and causes sufferers to lose previously formed memories. Some memories may be immediately lost, but others can be erased more gradually, making it difficult to catch. Another similar type is anterograde amnesia. Patients with this type of amnesia do not lose old memories, but have a difficult time forming new ones. This occurs when your hiccocampus is damaged and can either have permanent effects or only cause a temporary memory loss.

Transient global amnesia is one of the least understood forms of the condition. Researchers believe that this form occurs when the blood vessels to your brain are blocked or seizure-like activity occurs that deprives your brain of oxygen. This can cause repeated episodes of memory loss for several hours at a time.

Recognizing the symptoms of the various types of amnesia can help you determine if you or a loved one are suffering from the condition. This information is intended for your education and should not be taken as legal advice.
