Can your respiratory disorder qualify for Social Security disability?

Trying to determine whether or not your respiratory order will qualify for Social Security disability in Rhode Island can be difficult. Certain qualifications must be met and only some types of diseases will be approved. Here are some facts about determining your eligibility from the Social Security Administration.

First, it is important to realize that most respiratory disorders will require testing results and doctor verification to prove the severity of your disorder and affect whether you qualify. While you may have the same disease as another applicant, officials will not approve you for coverage unless you can show that your disorder dramatically affects your ability to function normally.

Next, understand that obesity may be a factor in your eligibility. Many disorders are adversely affected by the extra weight that diminishes the lung’s ability to expand fully. If you are obese, you can indicate this fact and officials will consider its effects on your condition.

The treatment you require will play a role in whether or not you are approved. The SSA has created several charts and graphs so that you can see where you fall and the likelihood that you will receive disability assistance. For many disorders, a certain number of hospitalizations must occur over a period of 12 months and admittance must last for at least 48 hours.

Some of the respiratory disorders that may qualify include cystic fibrosis, emphysema, bronchiectasis and pneumoconiosis. Other disorders that can be considered are those that affect your ability to move air into and out of the lungs.
