What should you do when faced with a wrong-way driver?

Every driver with some experience understands how easy it is to lose focus while driving. Between the familiarity that comes from driving the same roads day after day to the multi-tasking that is so common while driving, it is easy to let our minds wander while behind the wheel. And as our minds begin to wander, we may not have the same ability to react to dangerous situations as quickly as necessary.

One dangerous situation that could present itself while you travel is finding yourself in the path of a wrong-way driver. This type of scenario is terrifying, and unfortunately, numerous accidents caused by wrong-way drivers result in serious injuries or fatalities. Even if the incident is a relatively low-speed crash, the risk of death remains high. Therefore, you may wonder what you could do to remain as safe as possible.

Stay focused

As mentioned, letting your mind wander while driving could present a serious risk. When you need to remain on the lookout for hazards, staying focused will help you recognize and avoid dangers more easily. When it comes to wrong-way drivers, you should remain particularly alert during the hours between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. This time frame is when you will most likely come across an intoxicated driver, and drunk drivers make up the majority of wrong-way drivers.

Stay to the right

You may also want to stay conscious of which lane of travel you use. Typically, wrong-way drivers travel in the lane to your left. Therefore, you may have a better chance of avoiding these individuals if you utilize the right lane, especially at night.

Stay out of the way

If you do find yourself in the terrifying situation of having a car heading right towards you, your first instinct may be to freeze in fear. However, if possible, try to get out of the path of the vehicle. Pulling off to the shoulder of the road may allow you to get out of harm's way and give you a chance to call emergency services to report the driver.

Unfortunately, even if you take precautions, a wrong-way driver could still cause an accident that results in your suffering serious injuries or losing a loved one. In such a case, you may find yourself considering the possibility of seeking compensation for your losses. Information on personal injury or wrongful death claims could help you better understand how to potentially go about taking this type of action.
