What is post traumatic amnesia?

If you suffer a brain injury in Rhode Island, there are many conditions you could end up with. From a concussion to amnesia, any injury to the brain is serious and requires proper medical care. It will interfere with your ability to live a normal life and hinder your quality of life. It is especially difficult if the injury affects your memory, such as is the case with post-traumatic amnesia.

According to Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers, post-traumatic amnesia is a  condition where you are unable to make or have a hard time making new memories following a head injury. It may also involve trouble with focusing. This condition is often also called post-traumatic confusion.

While it is quite common to experience PTA after an injury, it is generally temporary. How long you have PTA often will be used to determine your diagnosis for recovery and to help doctors when creating your treatment plan. However, even after you have been diagnosed with no longer having PTA, you could still experience effects on your memory.

It can be difficult to adjust to having the condition for you and your loved ones. It can alter your personality by making you fidgety and anxious. You might be impatient and grumpier. It can affect everyone differently but is often a common side effect of a brain injury, so your health care workers should have a good understanding of how to help you adjust.
