Shatter the statistics - stay safe on skis

The first day of summer promises a full season ahead, and long days at the Rhode Island coast mean fun in the sun and on the water. Those who love getting out on boats, jet skis and other watercraft need to be especially careful this time of year when lakes and seaside resorts are more full than usual. Remember to prioritize safety at all times.

Last year, the U.S. Coast Guard released statistics detailing the factors that contributed most to boating accidents. The top three were inattention by operators, inexperience and failure to look out properly. Other factors rounding out the top 10 were dangerous weather and water, the use of alcohol, excessive speed and equipment failure.

More specifically, when the USCG categorized accidents according to vessels, skier mishaps accounted for 259 accidents, 13 fatalities and 268 injuries.

Tips for staying safe on skis

State Farm Insurance has some tips to avoid water ski accidents. Be sure the weather is conducive to water sports. If thunderstorms or other wet and windy conditions are in the forecast, save skiing for a prettier day.

Also, always wear a life jacket. A number of drownings have already taken place along the east coast this summer; life jackets may have made a difference in some of those stories. No matter whether you are a good swimmer or not, do not skip out on the life jacket. It may save you some day.

Other tips from State Farm include the following:

  • Take cues from the sun. When it starts going down, get out of the water.
  • Look for a water safety course nearby and complete it before heading out to ski.
  • Let others know when anyone in the group is out on the water.

State Farm Insurance reminds skiers and jet skiers to check their equipment regularly for the best chances of avoiding water ski accidents.
