Drugged driving rising across Rhode Island, nation

Anytime you take to the Rhode Island roadway, you assume a certain amount of risk, but the dangers of sharing the road increase substantially if others choose to drive under the influence. While the media and law enforcement agencies have long documented the dangers associated with driving while under the influence of alcohol, the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs have historically received less attention. At Karns Law Group, we understand that drivers who abuse drugs endanger everyone else on state roads, and we have helped many clients who suffered injury because of the actions of other drivers pursue appropriate recourse.

Per Rhode Island Public Radio, as more states choose to legalize marijuana, many are seeing an uptick in the number of drivers operating under the influence of the substance. Even states that have not legalized marijuana are seeing large amounts of under-the-influence drivers, with drugged-driving accidents rising steadily across Rhode Island and the entire nation.

While a survey conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that those who use marijuana are more likely to find themselves involved in car crashes than those who do not, a widespread problem exists when it comes to assessing a marijuana user’s degree of impairment. While authorities who believe motorists have been drinking can simply administer a breath test, there is not currently a similar test readily and nationally available that identifies a driver’s use of marijuana.

That may change in the near future, however, as research is currently underway that could potentially help clarify what, exactly, constitutes impairment when it comes to consumption of marijuana. Many cities across the nation are also conducting tests of “pot Breathalyzer” devices in the hope that such a device will help set clearer standard for determining marijuana-related impairment.
