How might a mild traumatic brain injury impact your life?

Rhode Island residents who suffer from brain injuries can experience an exceedingly broad range of symptoms, and some are far more debilitating than others. While medical professionals divide traumatic brain injuries into three categories based on severity (mild, moderate and severe), even mild traumatic brain injury sufferers can experience symptoms and side effects that affect numerous areas of their lives.

According to Brainline, about 15 percent of those who suffer “mild” traumatic brain injuries experience symptoms considered to be severely debilitating. This is particularly troubling given that many people who suffer mild blows to the head decide not to seek medical treatment, so they may not realize that they have symptoms severe enough to make a measurable impact on their lives moving forward.

Another problem common among mild TBI sufferers is that they may hear from their physicians that they are more than likely fine, and this may lead them to miss key changes in their condition that may indicate a more serious problem. While those who suffer moderate or severe TBIs may anticipate feeling or thinking differently in the aftermath of an accident, a mild TBI sufferer may ignore signs of trouble because he or she expects to make a full recovery.

If you suspect that you may be suffering from a mild TBI, be on high alert for symptoms that might include headaches, forgetfulness, sleep issues, visual disturbances, or feelings of depression or sadness. Even if you are unsure about whether you suffered one, it may serve you well to seek treatment and secure one or more professional opinions.
