How much can you expect to get if approved for SSDI?

As a resident of Rhode Island who has a disability that is substantial enough to prevent you from working, you may be thinking about applying for Social Security disability benefits from the U.S. Social Security Administration. You may, too, have questions about just how much money you can expect to receive each month, if approved, so that you can get a better idea of how to plan for your long-term financial future.

According to the Motley Fool, one in four of today’s 20-year-old Americans will suffer a debilitating injury before reaching age 67. In other words, it is entirely possible that you may need to apply for Social Security benefits at some point in an effort to support yourself. There is, however, no clear-cut answer to the question of how much you can expect to receive, if approved, on a monthly basis.

Instead, the amount you can expect to get in Social Security Disability Insurance will depend on certain factors, such as how much you earned in professional roles covered by Social Security. In other words, SSDI payments are, in some ways, similar to retirement benefits, because they are based on your overall earnings in Social Security-covered positions.

So, there is no clear and easy answer to how much you will receive each month if approved for SSDI. However, in many cases, approved applicants find that their SSDI payments come in a bit lower than their retirement payments would have, had they been able to work through to retirement age.

This information about SSDI benefits is educational in nature and is not a substitute for legal advice.
