Does aggressive driving pose a danger?

Have you ever been driving along only to be cut-off by another driver? Has another motorist yelled at you while passing or used inappropriate gestures to display their anger? Maybe you have been the one to display these behaviors while trying to get to an important meeting or appointment. This isn’t an uncommon occurrence in Rhode Island or throughout the United States. According to AAA, 80 percent of motorists across the country admit to having experienced anger while driving.

Aggressive driving, otherwise referred to as road rage, happens quite frequently, as some drivers cannot seem to control their anger while navigating the road. Aggressive drivers may display dangerous driving behaviors that can increase your risk of getting into a serious car accident. It is important that you know what these hazardous behaviors are so you can keep on the lookout for aggressive drivers and avoid them whenever possible.

People who have road rage may engage in the following dangerous driving behaviors:

  •          Erratic lane changing between vehicles
  •          Tailgating, or driving too closely behind another vehicle
  •          Obsessive horn honking, yelling or giving inappropriate gestures
  •          Speeding and cutting off other drivers

People who have road rage may go as far as to hit or bump into another car. In some cases, angry drivers may get out of their vehicle to approach another vehicle and attempt to start a physical altercation. Law enforcement urges drivers who are threatened by road rage to avoid engaging with angry drivers and call officers to report hazardous behaviors.
